Adolf Hitler with Unity Mitford in Bayreuth in 1936, a year after they first met.
In the summer of 1934, Unity had traveled to Munich in the hope of meeting her idol, Adolf Hitler. Upon learning that he often had lunch at the Osteria Bavaria, she began eating there as well. She did everything she could to catch his attention. Yet ten months were to pass before Hitler finally invited the persistent English girl to his table on the 9th of February, 1935. The two of them chatted for half an hour and quickly realized they were soulmates. It was the most wonderful and beautiful day of my life", wrote Unity to her father. „I am so happy that I wouldn't mind a bit, dying. I'd suppose I am the luckiest girl in the world. For me he is the greatest man of all time."
Her feelings were reciprocated. Hitler was particularly intrigued by Unity's middle name, Valkyrie. And he was fascinated to learn that her grandfather had translated the antiSemitic works of Houston Stewart Chamberlain. She would be described by Hitler as "a perfect specimen of Aryan womanhood”.

Unity was conceived in Canada in the town of Swastika, Ontario where her family had gold mines. One of seven children. She belonged to Hitler's inner circle of friends. When the United Kingdom and Germany went to war, she attempted suicide in Munich by shooting herself in the head. She survived but was badly injured. She was allowed safe passage back to England but never recovered from the extensive brain damage; she later died from meningitis related to the wound.

We owe all that we have to these great and noble souls. I was happy to find a Brit of such stature.
