When my daughter turned 12 she was becoming a legitimate good helper and so I gave her the option; would she like to make a little bit of cash or would she like to pick out a calf and get free feed for it. Immediately, she decided that she would like a calf.

Then what happened is the calf grew and grew until she was able to sell that same calf to Family Farm Beef Box… because she happens to know the guy who runs that business! Now she is 13 and has two calves. This might not seem too impressive but she’s already doing the math of what could happen over the next few years.

She also paved the way for her brother who just turned 12… and he is a typical 12 year old with a very short attention span. I suspected he might be more interested in the immediate gratification of some spending money, but he also chose to pick out a calf.
