“DAY ONE: July 8, 1968. As best we can tell, Robert M. Pirsig began his epic motorcycle ride west with Chris and the Sutherlands that his book "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" is based on on July 8 1968, departing from his home in St. Paul, MN the Monday after a July 4th weekend. Pirsig had already sent letters to publishers for a book entitled "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" in June, but the book itself was yet to be written. This is Pirsig’s own picture from the first day of the trip at a rest stop at Camp Buell Historic Site in Milnor, ND.
