Another nuclear technology that the "experts" in Australia would appear to know nothing about ... Copenhagen Atomics has a project running to deliver a 100 MW (thermal) molten salt reactor running with processed nuclear waste (U238/Plutonium) and Thorium with Lithium Fluoride salt and Deuterium Oxide (Heavy Water) moderator. Output temperature is 560C and the whole reactor with shielding fits into a standard 40 foot container. The reactor is fuelled and runs for 8 years, then a new reactor module is swapped in. The spent reactor is removed for salt processing to remove fission products and actinides. The fission products represent a storage requirement for 300 years to decay to background and the actinides are recycled as fuel. Currently the company is building cold (non fission) prototypes and aims to have a 1 MW demonstrator running in 2025 with first commercial sized unit in 2028. The modular reactor means that it could be plugged into any application which requires process heat, that is, power generation, chemical synthesis, mineral processing, etc. The form factor of a 40 foot container makes it easy to transport since it will integrate with existing systems seamlessly. https://copenhagenatomics.com
