How shall we then live? 🧵 1/ Jeremiah 29 wasn't written to us. It was written to a specific people, at a specific time, under a specific judgment. I'm not going to pretend otherwise. But I've been sitting with the principle in it, alongside 1 Thessalonians 4 and 1 Timothy 2, and I think there's something here that speaks directly to those of us in this space who are invested in and planning for prosperity — and wondering what the appropriate posture is while we do it. The instruction to the exiles was: build houses, plant gardens, marry, have children, multiply. Seek the welfare of the city where you've been sent. Pray for it. In its welfare, you will have welfare. Not: conquer the city. Not: withdraw from the city. Not: build sovereign nodes on an island and wait for the system to collapse. Build. Plant. Marry. Multiply. Embedded flourishing inside a jurisdiction you don't control. 🏡🌱 2/ Paul says the same thing in a different key: "Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business, and to work with your hands." (1 Thess 4:11) ✋ "That we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty." (1 Tim 2:2) 🕊️ Quiet. Peaceable. Working with your hands. Winning the respect of outsiders by the quality of your daily life, not the volume of your opinions. Here's what I'm taking from this: the biblical posture for people pursuing prosperity is not conquest and it's not isolation. It's productive embeddedness. Build something real. Plant something that feeds people. Work with your hands. Be so stable, so quiet, so peaceable that the community around you — including people who don't share your convictions — is glad you're there. 🤝 And then bring the harvest back to the table. The local church. The widow. The orphan. The neighbor who can't pay you back. 🍞 3/ Prosperity that stays in the wallet is not sovereignty. It's just a more sophisticated form of alone. The independence is real, but it's instrumental — it exists to fund the dependency. The covenant community. The people who know your name and your failures, not just your wallet. 🫂 The blockchain protects the harvest. The table is what the harvest is for. But then I noticed something in the Jeremiah passage I'd been skipping past. Right after the instruction to build and plant and seek the welfare of the city — this: "Do not let your prophets who are in your midst and your diviners deceive you, and do not listen to the dreams which they dream. For they prophesy falsely to you in My name; I have not sent them." ⚠️ 4/ A warning. Embedded right in the flourishing instruction. And it hits different when you read it in the context of where I spend most of my time — crypto Twitter, this space, the attention economy. 📱 Because we have prophets. We have people who dream dreams and prophesy in bold confidence about what's coming. Price targets. Timeline predictions. "This is the bottom." "This is the breakout." "This changes everything." Narratives dressed as revelation. 📈 And some of them are sincere. Some of them are right sometimes. But the principle stands: discern whom you're listening to. Not every dream is from God. Not every prediction is from conviction. Some of it is engagement farming dressed in prophetic language. Some of it is a man who needs the chart to go up because his identity is tied to it. 🎭 "I have not sent them." That's the test. Not: is it exciting? Not: does it have a lot of likes? But: was this sent? Is there actual fruit behind the voice, or just volume? 🔊 5/ I don't have this figured out. I'm not pretending I do. I've been the guy chasing the dream instead of planting the garden. I've been the guy building the node instead of sitting at the table. I'm writing this to myself first. 🪞 But I think the instruction is simpler than we've made it: Build. Plant. Work with your hands. Lead a quiet life. Seek the welfare of the place where you live. Bring the harvest to the people who need it. And when someone tells you they've seen the future, check whether they were sent — or whether they just need you to keep listening. 🌾 The goal isn't to win the argument. The goal isn't to build an archipelago of sovereign fortresses. The goal is to be the kind of household — productive, peaceable, generous, accountable — that makes the neighborhood better because you're in it. 🏘️ The rails we're building are real and I believe in them.
