The Cart and the Cathedral: Notes on the American Unraveling Dear Fellow Gab Fellers, One notices first the shopping carts. Abandoned at angles in parking lots, wheels tilted toward the curbs like grounded weathervanes. Then the flags—not those crisp banners snapping on parade grounds, but the faded ones hanging limp from suburban porches, their stars bleeding into blue. These are the symptoms. The disease is older. Well I say I have seen this play before. Different actors, slightly altered script. The setting shifts from Roman piazzas to American strip malls, but the climax remains unchanged: a people forgetting why they built the walls in the first place. There are those who still understand. Who return their carts to the corral, who patch the roof before the rain comes. They see the nation not as real estate for global speculation but as inheritance—something to be handed down, improved, defended. Their vision is architectural: foundations, load-bearing walls, generations under one roof. Then there are the fcking managers. The men with clipboards who see only square footage and demographic projections. To them, a nation is just another franchise location. The people merely consumers, the culture just branding. They’ll sell the fixtures piecemeal if it boosts quarterly reports. I’ve drunk with these types in Brussels hotel bars. They measure sovereignty in tariff percentages and migrant labor quotas. The strange part? Both factions use the same words. “#Freedom.” “#Progress.” “#Security.” Like identical suitcases packed with entirely different weapons. The truth is written in the demographic charts they don’t want you to see. In the pension funds straining under replacement-level fertility. In the school curricula that teach children to despise their ancestors and worship the fake and gay. A fcking arithmetic. A managed decline. The resistance begins where it always does: in the small refusals. The cart returned. The flag flown. The history book not thrown away. They want you to think you’re alone in these gestures. You aren’t.
