Because the word literally did not exist yet! It wasn’t until 1841 that Sir Richard Owen—a brilliant anatomist and the first Director of the Natural History Museum in London—invented the term. As scientists began digging up massive, fossilized bones, Owen realized these creatures needed a specific classification. He combined two Greek words: deinos (meaning "terrible" or "fearfully great") and sauros (meaning "lizard"). Just like that, the "Dinosaur" was born. What Were They Called Before 1841? If the word "dinosaur" was invented in 1841, what did humanity call these massive reptilian beasts for the thousands of years prior? Depending on the culture and the time period, they were known by other names: Dragons, Serpents, Behemoths, and Leviathans. God created land animals—including the great "terrible lizards"—on Day 6 of Creation, the very same day He created mankind.
