This Common Sense Soapbox episode explains how moral relativism is less conducive to civility than to contention, as it encourages people to neglect seeking unity around objective moral standards, but to adopt whatever subjective moral standards they please, and it also rejects persuasion as a means of trying to achieve consensus, which leaves only either manipulation or coercion to achieve this task. Our perception of reality is somewhat subjective, due to our limited-and-imperfect ability to perceive it and to remember it and to express it and so forth, but reality is nevertheless objective---not only the physical laws that govern matter-and-energy but also the moral laws that govern human behavior. Inventing our own morality is rather like being our own god, but we don't deserve self-worship. Let's please humble ourselves to embrace moral absolutism, even if we never understand it with perfect comprehensiveness or accuracy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-U4Qjp3ljY #Religion #Morality #MoralRelativism #Division #Convention #Persuasion
