This TEDx talk explains how parents (and others) may set rules and/or boundaries properly with love (while minimizing conflict) without saying "no" in accordance with self-determination theory, which involves (1) expressing empathy to satisfy innate human needs for relatedness, (2) communicating clearly to satisfy innate human needs for competence, and (3) allowing choice to satisfy innate human needs for autonomy. For example, if a child asks for some chocolate before a meal, then a parent may empathize about also loving chocolate, explain clearly the rule about eating essentials before dessert, and allow a choice of eating chocolate either after dinner or tomorrow. Other examples may include replacing an absolute-no with either a conditional-yes or else a thinking-invitation to guide thinking toward the correct conclusion. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2Zm1yx0Doo #Family #Parenting #Relationships #Rules #Boundaries #PowerStruggles
