Religion is more powerful than any other institution at instilling values, which process is essential to establishing commonplace virtue, and virtue is innately connected with freedom. Freedom is essential for genuine virtue to occur, virtue can-and-should include respect for people's equal God-given rights, and virtue is highly conducive to freedom for myriad reasons, including diminished lust for Earthly power and wealth and "glory," along with augmented resistance to bribery and threats. In the absence of virtue, freedom never endures indefinitely, as history has repeatedly proven. Some people like John Locke expertly applied Christian doctrine to political philosophy (which considers the moral principles that govern the exercise of power) to establish classical liberalism (a.k.a. libertarianism), which guiding philosophy inspired America's wise virtuous founders---but other people like Ayn Rand have attempted to prune libertarianism from its Christian roots to graft it into a more self-centered perspective like so-called Objectivism, which I believe is innately self-contradictory.
