The Orphaned Generation: What Happens When Children Are Taught to Despise Their Inheritance The shallow debate is about schools. The deeper debate is about memory. Because a civilization does not survive merely by having buildings, laws, money, borders, museums, and textbooks. It survives by transmitting a story. Not propaganda. Not blind nationalism. Not fake perfection. A story. A living memory that tells children: You come from somewhere. You inherit both glory and failure. You are responsible for continuing what was noble, correcting what was corrupt, and understanding the past with enough depth to become worthy of the future. That is what education is supposed to do. But something else has happened. Many young people are not being given history. They are being given a courtroom. The past is placed on trial. Every institution becomes evidence. Every tradition becomes suspicious. Every achievement is searched for guilt. Every hero is reduced to his worst association. Every work of art is interrogated for oppression. Every national story is rewritten as a crime scene. And the child is not taught to ask, “What happened?” The child is trained to ask, “Who was the oppressor?” That is not education. That is moral compression. History is vast. Human beings are complicated. Civilizations are contradictory. The same nation can produce slavery and abolition. Empire and liberty. Cruelty and reform. Exploitation and invention. War and law. Hypocrisy and conscience. Oppression and the moral language used to defeat oppression. That is the complexity a mature mind must be able to hold.
