This act is the latest in the administration’s targeting of public servants within the intelligence community. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard accused the 37 officials of engaging in the “politicization or weaponization of intelligence” to advance personal or partisan goals, failing to safeguard classified information, failing to “adhere to professional analytic tradecraft standards," and other “detrimental" conduct. Gabbard’s memo does not offer additional evidence backing up the accusations. Many of the targeted officials have already left the federal government, having served in senior national security positions. Most held low-profile positions away from the public eye. Some of the targeted officials worked on larger projects, many of which put Trump in a bad light, for example, the intelligence assessment that found Russia interfered with the 2016 presidential election. Some signed a 2019 letter that was posted on social media last month by Laura Loomer, signaling their concern about the president. The administration’s actions are not new; Trump has shown continued distrust in intelligence officials, deeming them to be working against his interests. Critics say revoking clearances from officials is risky and could discourage dissenting voices from the national security community. This is especially detrimental for the intelligence community that draws from a wide range of viewpoints before creating an assessment. “These are unlawful and unconstitutional decisions that deviate from well-settled, decades-old laws and policies that sought to protect against just this type of action,” Mark Zaid, a national security lawyer who is among the 37 officials whose clearance was revoked, said in a statement. Zaid called the administration’s move hypocritical to “claim these individuals politicized or weaponized intelligence.” Security clearances are crucial for both current and former government workers whose jobs require them to retain access to sensitive information. Stripping security clearances could make it harder for government workers to do their jobs. Trump said on his first day of office that he would revoke security clearances from more than four dozen former intelligence officials. These officials signed a letter in 2020 saying that the federal probe into Hunter Biden’s laptop was part of the “Russian information operation.” Since he took office, Trump has also revoked clearances from former President Joe Biden and former Vice President Kamala Harris. Gabbard defended Trump’s decision on Tuesday. “Being entrusted with a security clearance is a privilege, not a right," she wrote on X. "Those in the Intelligence Community who betray their oath to the Constitution and put their own interests ahead of the American people have broken the sacred trust they promised to uphold.” The revocation comes amidst a Gabbard and other Trump administration officials revisiting the intelligence community’s assessment of Russia’s 2016 election intervention. In multiple prior investigations, the same conclusion was reached: Russia interfered in the 2016 election through social media campaigns and a hack-and-leak of Democratic emails. Trump has vehemently disagreed with the intelligence community’s findings, and his Department of Justice authorized a grand jury investigation earlier this month. The investigation may scrutinize Obama-era officials. https://kfoxtv.com/news/nation-world/trump-administration-revokes-security-clearances-of-37-intelligence-officials-tusli-gabbard-donald-trump-intelligence-community-russia-interference
