This is consistent with the poor susceptibility of both species toward the natural transmission of The D614 strain of SARS-CoV-2. While raccoon dogs have only ever been tested with G614 MUC-IMB-1, of which transmission only occur with R0=1 (2/3 of inoculated animals infected 2/3 of contact animals), testing of red foxes with SARS-CoV-2 USA-WA-1 indicate that they shed less virus (4.5 log PFU maximum) compared to what that were used to inoculate them (5.1 to 6.0 log PFU) without demonstration of transmission, indicating that transmission could not happen in red foxes, either. This is not surprising, as the negative test results of Chinese minks, foxes or raccoon dogs are consistent with the fact that all 3 species are farmed only in Northern China, due to the obligate requirement of a winter in order for their pelts to mature to usability with a winter coat.
