Grizzled Old Nam Vet - Follow Gab.com/GrizzledOldNamVet THE STRANGEST ASSAULT I HAD IN NAM (See notes at end of post)_** I was in the original assault on Cu Chi - think it was Jan '66. I was the lead recon Huey gunship. Our job was to recon the LZ (landing zone) - I guess you could say we were sacrificed to see if we would be fired on. We made a pass over the LZ - 100 kts with skids 5' off ground. We received no fire so we radioed back to the Slicks (Troop Hueys) - "LZ cold". Then as soon as the Slicks passed over the river on the east side of the LZ, All Hell Broke Loose‼️ As I remember (long time ago) - we lost 3 Hueys and a Chinook on that assault - all in about 15 minutes. I would not be writing this if we hadn't been "quick on the draw". We were flying straight for a bunker that was firing a 51 caliber at us (green tracers coming up at us) We took out the bunker with 4 rockets before they took us out‼️ It was later found that the quiet, little village of Cu Chi was above an underground city of tunnels #TakeRedPill 💊 NOTES: Normally, on a mission like this (there was a lot at stake on this mission), they would have done extensive recon (I'm sure they did), but there was nothing to see (above ground)👁️ 👀 Cu Chi turned out to be an amazing, fortified, underground city. From above ground, it just looked like a sleepy village. Our mission that day was to clear it for the 25th Div, from Hawaii. This would be their base. I salute the "Tunnel Rats" that had to go in later to clear it :salute:
