The study examines the spiritual roots of the American Revolution that began with a patriotic fervor in the colonial churches and was set aflame by preachers who used their pulpits to fan the flames of liberty. The "Black Robed Brigade," preachers, so named for their black clerical robes, stirred the colonies to fight for their "unalienable rights." What few know is that Baptists played a significant role in shaping America’s ideas about liberty and patriotism. Indeed, it was Baptist preacher John Leland who demanded a "Bill of Rights" accompany the Constitution of the United States.
