Nine years old when her teacher noticed she flinched every time a man raised his voice. Nine years old when she started wearing long sleeves in the summer. And nobody asked why. Not because nobody saw it. Because the system wasn't built to ask. It was built to process. File numbers. Case workers with 80 children on their desk and 45 minutes to decide if a home is safe. Judges who've never visited the house they're sending a child back to. And a foster system so overwhelmed that children fall through the cracks not by accident... but by design. The average case worker in America handles 24 cases at once. Some carry over 40. They're underpaid. Undertrained. And buried under a bureaucracy that measures success by how many files are closed... not how many children are safe. A closed file doesn't mean a saved child. Sometimes it means the opposite. Sometimes it means everyone stopped looking. Over 400,000 children are in the foster care system in the United States right now. Tonight. As you read this.
