Last week, NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani vetoed Intro 175-B, a bill that would have required NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch to devise safety plans for protests at educational institutions. The bill passed 30–19 but lacked a veto-proof majority, unlike a similar bill for houses of worship that passed with a 44–5 vote. Mamdani argued the bill's broad definitions could restrict vital protests, particularly related to ICE or Palestinian rights. Council Speaker Julie Menin defended it as a way to balance police protections with First Amendment rights. #NYPD #activism #FirstAmendment #NYC #protests https://www.city-journal.org/article/mamdani-veto-nypd-school-protests? #civilrights #freedomofspeech #NYCpolitics #policeaccountability
