LYNNWOOD, Wash. — On April 20, Lynnwood police used a GPS tracking dart to apprehend a suspected car thief without engaging in a high-speed chase. The suspect had stolen a Nissan Pathfinder from an auto parts store parking lot. Officers employed a device called StarChase, which fires a dart coated in adhesive onto the vehicle, allowing them to track it remotely. The suspect was found about 10 miles away, and after the vehicle crashed into a ravine, he fled on foot but was subsequently located by K9 Cannon and his handler. Prosecutors have charged the suspect with vehicle theft and resisting arrest; he has pleaded not guilty.
