Monday marks 50 years since a catastrophic ammonia truck crash in Houston that drastically changed hazardous material transportation. On May 11, 1976, a tanker carrying over 7,500 gallons of anhydrous ammonia crashed from the 610 West Loop to the Southwest Freeway below, releasing toxic chemicals into the air. Initially, only the driver died, but six more succumbed to exposure, with nearly 200 others treated or hospitalized. The incident prompted a review by the NTSB, leading to enhanced regulations. Currently, the 610 Loop is a designated hazmat route, but restrictions were implemented on the overpass where the crash occurred to prevent future disasters. #transportation #toxicchemicals #safetyregulations #hazardousmaterials #Houstonhistory #safetyfirst #chemicalspill #environmentalimpact https://www.khou.com/article/news/local/houston-ammonia-disaster-50-years-later/285-146d3b15-b60f-47fc-afed-70d0e652443a
