NASA announced on June 3, 2026, that the MAVEN spacecraft is officially dead after losing contact on December 6, 2025, due to a drained battery from an unknown anomaly. MAVEN, which studied Mars' atmosphere for over 11 years since its arrival on September 21, 2014, was unable to be recovered following a high-rate rotation observed upon its reemergence from behind Mars. NASA's anomaly review board confirmed the loss of communication was caused by the battery draining.
