The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that DHS can move forward with ending Temporary Protection status, overturning lower court blocks that had kept the designations in place during litigation. #newyorkcity Mamdani issued an official statement the same day calling the decision one of the largest attacks on migrants in modern American history. He says the migrants, who were allowed to come to the US on a temporary basis (hence the temporary in TPS) built lives here, raised families, opened businesses, and become part of New York communities. He told those with TPS in the five boroughs that New York City is their home, they belong here, and the city will not turn its backs on them. The initial TPS term is set by federal statute at 6 to 18 months. However it was repeatedly extended and re-designated more than a dozen times across the Obama, Trump (first term), and Biden administrations. It was continuously renewed with 18-month periods in most cases until recent termination efforts ended it. The Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs announced it will release more resources (taxpayer funded) soon and set up a (taxpayer funded) hotline for free, confidential legal assistance and questions about status.
