It prioritized sovereignty, security screening, and cultural cohesion over EU pressure. The European Commission sued; the European Court of Justice ruled in 2020 that Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic violated EU law by refusing quotas. Poland simply did not comply and didn't face any effective enforcement. Even into 2026, Polish leaders continue to reject new mandatory relocation demands. EU institutions, left-leaning media, and NGOs immediately called people in Polnd “Islamophobic” and xenophobic. They didn't care. A 2016 cover in the Polish magazine wSieci showed a white woman assaulted by dark-skinned men under the headline “The Islamic rpe of Europe” drew international outrage from outlets like the Washington Post and The Guardian, which compared the imagery to historical rcist propaganda. They didn't care Academics and commentators accused Poland of stoking irrational fear despite its tiny mslim population of under 0.1 percent. They didn't care. Polls at the time showed strong public backing for the government’s anti-mslim migration - with many Poles saying they would rather leave the EU than accept large numbers of mslim refugees.
