#new Sen. Mitch "Turtle Head" McConnell i(R-KY) Is still hospitalized more than three weeks after he was taken by ambulance on 'advanced life support' #DC Now unverified reports are coming in that McConnell is suffering from organ failure - and concerns are rising about Kentucky’s special-election-only law that blocks any quick Republican replacement for his seat. #Kentucky The medical emergency happened on June 14th with a 911 call describing a cardiac arrest and unconscious person at McConnell’s address. Responders requested Medic 3, the D.C. Fire and EMS advanced life support unit, with a medic saying “CPR in progress” and requesting a supervisor notification. By 1:30 p.m. that same day his spokesperson announced he had been hospitalized and was “receiving excellent care,” without saying what happened. The next day, June 15, Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) and Senate Republican Whip John Barrasso (R-WY) both said they talked to him directly. #Senate His staff claimed he was“fully engaged with staff on Senate business and Kentucky matters," However, no one heard from McConnell publicly. McConnell, 84, last voted in the Senate on June 11. McConnell’s office said he “continues his recovery in the hospital” and “continues to improve,” while “working closely with his staff on Kentucky and Senate matters while the Senate is out of session.” Claims that McConnell is brain dead with organ failure and on life support have not been verified. Even so, for those speculating that the GOP needs to make quick moves to replace McConnell by August 3rd, Kentucky law eliminates any gubernatorial appointment power for U.S. Senate vacancies and mandates a special election instead. Gov. Beshear, a Democrat, must issue a proclamation calling the election - the winner will only serve until the end of McConnell's term which is January 2027. McConnell announced in February 2025 he would not seek re-election, so the regular November 3, 2026, election, featuring Republican nominee Andy Barr against Democrat Charles Booker and others, will fill the full six-year term started in 2027 regardless. The special election process requires time for proclamation, candidate filing deadlines, potential primaries, and voting under state statutes. No mechanism exists for Republicans to “name” or quickly elect a replacement before August 3. A vacancy declared in early July would most likely leave the seat empty through the summer and into the fall. If McConnell resigns or dies, the process starts only after the vacancy happens. Even an expedited special election would not realistically seat a new senator before early August. Elaine Chao, has not issued public statements on her husband or what comes next. She did however get on a plane days after her husband was hospitalized and fly to China to speak with high ranking officials.
