America Needs A New Law... ...by which we put an end to engineered consent. SO, ANYONE WHOSE TWEETS or Facebook posts (or the like) were censored (either through outright deletion or through "visibility filtering" on social media at the behest of (or due to pressure by) any state actor or agency has suffered a civil rights violation. The perps have committed crimes by those violations. But I think it's time for additions to the federal and state codes criminalizing any such acts by officials. Any official act meant to influence public opinion, perceptions or perspectives or to hinder or discourage or diminish the free flow of speech from any creator to any consumer-- whether through censorship, deception, prejudicial tagging or by any means or for any pretext whatever-- should land the perp in prison. I don't think any elaboration of the argument is really needed. This law wouldn't compromise official secrecy classifications or practices (howevermuch some of those practices merit critical scrutiny). It would simply deter propaganda and other gaslighting by government actors of the sort by which Americans have long been herded into the embrace or acceptance of state-agenda-serving views. The offenses described here should bear the harshest of penalties, since attempts by public servants to control or "manage" Americans' knowledge, perceptions or perspectives is inherently anathema to government by and for the People, and hence is profoundly subversive of our Constitutional structure and principles.
