The Man Who Presided Over the Salem Witch Trials Also Championed the First Vaccine in America. He Called It a Gift From God. Cotton Mather — Puritan minister, intellectual, and consultant in the Salem witch trials — worked with Dr. Zabdiel Boylston in the 1720s to introduce variolation to New England during a smallpox outbreak. Variolation was the earliest vaccine technique: deliberately infecting patients with material from smallpox pustules to induce immunity. Mather proclaimed it divinely ordained. The religious framing of vaccination as sacred duty is not new. It is 300 years old. Understanding that history is essential to understanding the ideology that drives it today.
