"Misinformation" Was the Word of the Year in 2018. By 2020 It Was an Official MeSH Term in the National Library of Medicine. That Wasn't an Accident. A word doesn't become a medical classification on its own. MeSH — Medical Subject Headings — is the controlled vocabulary used to index biomedical literature in the National Library of Medicine. Getting a term into MeSH requires institutional consensus and deliberate effort. "Misinformation" went from dictionary word of the year to official medical category in two years — just in time for the pandemic. The infrastructure to label dissent as a medical problem was built before the dissent began.
