If You Have Hearing Loss and You're Not Treating It, You Are Missing One of the Biggest Things You Can Do to Prevent Alzheimer's. Two mechanisms — both documented. First: the brain overloads its processing power trying to interpret incomplete audio signals, dedicating resources to sound interpretation that should be used for cognition. Second: untreated hearing loss causes social isolation — and social isolation is itself an independent risk factor for dementia. Hearing aids are widely available, affordable, and highly effective. This is one of the most easily modifiable Alzheimer's risk factors that exists. Most people aren't acting on it.
