Alcohol Is a Neurotoxin. It Was Produced by Fungus to Hurt Animals With Nervous Systems. That Is Its Evolutionary Design. It activates GABA receptors and slows the entire central nervous system. In sufficient quantities it is fatal. And in regular use over decades, it is one of the most powerful modifiable risk factors for Alzheimer's disease. A grandmother who never drank: cognitive decline only at the very end of life, died at 99. A father who drank heavily: severe Alzheimer's at 83. Same family. Different choices. Sixteen years of life and cognitive function — that is what the alcohol variable cost.
