This Gregory Baum was born to a Jewish mother and Protestant father in Berlin. In the 1940s, they fled Nazi Germany. He “converted” to Catholicism and became a priest. During the Second Vatican Council, he was one of the main drafters of the conciliar document Nostra Aetate, in which he urged an end to Christian efforts to convert Jews and recognition of the religious freedom of all religions, valuing their own sacred traditions (basically universalism).
