CULTURE CORNER: THE 'DISCUS THROWER' "Discobolus" ("Discus Thrower") is a statue by the Greek sculptor Myron. It is dated to 450-460 BCE. Sadly, the original, which was bronze, was lost in antiquity. Fortunately, however, Roman sculptors had made exact marble copies of it before it disappeared. In 1938, Adolf Hitler bought one of these Roman copies from the Italian government, for the princely sum of 5 million lira. The Fuehrer paid for the statue out of his own pocket. He had it displayed at the Glyptothek museum in Munich. On the occasion of its unveiling, he gave an address which included the following statement: “May none of you fail to visit the Glyptothek, for there you will see how splendid man used to be in the beauty of his body… and you will realize that we can speak of progress only when we have not only attained such beauty but even, if possible, when we have surpassed it.” Another relevant quote by Hitler may be found in Mein Kampf: "The Hellenic idea of culture should also be preserved for us in its exemplary beauty... A culture combining millenniums and embracing Hellenism and Germanism is fight for its existence."
