**February 23** is the National Socialist holiday known as "Day of the Banner." It commemorates the death in 1930 of NS martyr Horst Wessel. He died on that day after being shot down in ambush by a Communist murder squad the previous month. Comrade Wessel was a captain (*Sturmfuehrer*) in the stormtroops (*Sturmabteilung* or SA). Today he is best known for composing the Movement's anthem "Raise the Banner!", formally called "The Horst Wessel Song" in his honor.
