June 15: On this day in 1215, the English King John affixed his royal seal on the document known as the Magna Carta ("Great Charter"). This was the first legal document to formally limit the absolute power of the monarchy... ...but it also was an attempt to limit the financial power of the Jews. Clause 10 limits the right of Jews to collect interest on debts owed to them by businessmen. Clause 11 limits the right of Jews to collect debts from widows & orphans. Although helpful & well-meaning, these clauses fell far short of what was needed to break the growing Jewish stranglehold on the English economy. That would only come in 1290, when good King Edward I issued his Edict of Expulsion, prohibiting Jews from living in England. The edict was in effect through 1656, when Jews were readmitted to Britain by Oliver Cromwell. #Jews #JewishQuestion #BritishHistory #WhiteHistory
