#AncientGreece #CalydonianBoarHunt The Most Famous Greek Myth You’ve Probably Never Heard Of It was the greatest gathering of heroes the Greek world had ever seen. Princes and warriors drawn from across the ancient world to a single kingdom in central Greece, all summoned by the threat of a monstrous beast sent by an angry goddess. The hunt that followed would end in glory, in bloodshed, and in a family tragedy the Greeks would remember for centuries. The Calydonian Boar Hunt belongs to the generation just before the Trojan War, set in the kingdom of Calydon, a real place in the region of Aetolia in western Greece. It brought together some of the most famous figures of the Age of Heroes, including Meleager the prince of Calydon, Theseus of Athens, the twins Castor and Polydeuces, and most strikingly Atalanta, the swift-footed huntress whose presence among so many men would prove the catalyst for the catastrophe to come. The tale was already ancient by the time Homer composed the Iliad, and was given its fullest surviving form by the Roman poet Ovid in his Metamorphoses. The Greek geographer Pausanias, writing in the second century AD, recorded that the tusks of the great boar were still kept as sacred relics in a temple in his own day, more than a thousand years after the supposed events. The story has left a striking visual legacy, from ancient Greek vase painting to Rubens's famous canvas in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich. The figure of Atalanta in particular has fascinated writers and thinkers ever since. She is one of the very few women in Greek myth permitted to stand as the equal of male heroes, and her role in the hunt has made her a touchstone for every age that has wrestled with questions of gender and excellence. In this video, we tell the entire story of the Calydonian Boar Hunt from beginning to end. From the slighted goddess who sent the beast, to the great gathering of heroes who answered the call, to the bitter family quarrel that followed, this is one of the most haunting tales of the Age of Heroes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xdxXmc8KAUI
