The image on the left is the original emblem from the 1534 edition of Alciatoโ€™s Emblemata; my version is on the right done in pen and ink. The emblem depicts the Roman god Faunus/Pan blowing a horn. In Greek and Roman mythology, the sudden onset of fear and panicโ€“whether it happens to a crowd in a tense situation like a battle or when you are alone in a forestโ€“was said to be caused by this god. Some other influences Pan was said to have over mankind relate to sensuality and lust. It seems like an odd thing, but I think the connection between terror and lust is that both involve a sudden temporary loss of reason resulting in irrational and deleterious behavior. Itโ€™s probably also why the wickedly mischievous figure of Faunus/Panโ€“the half goat, half manโ€“became linked with the Devil in Christianity. #abookofemblems #emblembook #emblems #mgenovaart #sketchbook #dailysketch #drawing #penandink #sketch #RenaissanceArt #GreekMyth #RomanMyth #mythology #panic #suddenTerror #Pan #Faunus
