A sugar that does NOT belong in the human body. Read on... AGS is caused by a sensitization to alpha-gal, a sugar molecule found in the cells of most mammals (dogs, cats, cows, sheep, pigs, etc.). It's primarily triggered by a bite from a lone star tick (most common in the Southeastern US) – but bites from other ticks (blacklegged, deer tick) can also cause it. The Lone Star tick’s saliva contains alpha-gal (galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose), a sugar molecule found in most mammals like cows, pigs, sheep but not in humans.
