SUPER FULL STRAWBERRY MOON AND PERIGEE From The Geodesy Operations Office #earth #moon #sun #full_moon #strawberry_moon #super_moon #geodesy #astronomy The name “Strawberry Moon” refers to the northern hemisphere-summer folk-name used by the Algonquin, Ojibwa, Dakota and Lakota peoples when strawberry plants, which bloomed in the spring have ripening fruit. This is also near the day of the perigee, i.e. closest point, to Earth in it’s orbit cycle. Additionally, this is the last Super for 2021. Starting wth the first event, the time of the perigee will be 09:59 UTC 23 June. Then The Super Strawberry Moon will be 18:41 UTC 24 June. Maximum Solar illumination will be at 05:50 UTC 25 June, making the Full Strawberry Moon appear full for about 10 hours as it transits (orbit motion and Earth rotation) the sky. Cloud cover is always a factor in visibility.
