I think for decades we have been told diversity is a strength and something to glamorize but the truth is that we live in the most diverse era and simultaneously we also live in the most lonely era, every time people are polled they say they are lonely and it is all starting to make sense. Diversity makes us lonely, when we can't relate to our neighbors because we don't share enough in common we become isolated. The biggest social hurdle in a diverse society is finding people you can personally relate to, that is a problem that wouldn't exist if we had homogeny. I believe there is a difference between variety and diversity, diversity has the root word division in it, it means there is not just a difference but a contradictory difference. When people have different cultures and religions they contradict each other, similar to how people can't communicate if they don't share a common language. People make a concerted effort to live amongst others who are like them, this is not discrimination or segregation coming from the top down through coercion, it's a separation at the grassroots level. This is not just about open borders and electoral maps with blue urban enclaves and the desire to limit other cultures from coming into the country, this is fundamentally a natural phenomenon of desiring social connections that are strengthened or defined by unity and prevented by incompatible differences. This is not meant to be a charged post, I think it's the conventional belief that we set filters and gatekeep our social circles. That's why I think it's good to soul search the community to try to find a community of people who resonate/align with ones values. What do y'all think?
