For centuries, the path toward the Catholic priesthood visibly passed through the traditional orders: Porter → Lector → Exorcist → Acolyte → Subdeacon → Deacon → Priest Each step taught that service in the sanctuary was ordered toward the altar, the priesthood, and ultimately the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Then came major liturgical changes. The minor orders were largely removed from ordinary Latin-Rite life, lector and acolyte became lay ministries, altar girls became common, and Pope Francis later opened the instituted ministries of lector and acolyte to women. This Sexagesima Sunday sermon asks a difficult question: Did eliminating the minor orders fundamentally change how Catholics understand the sanctuary? And once those traditional boundaries disappeared, was everything that followed really so surprising?
