There's a little story to this painting: when I took photo references for it a few years ago, the river looked just as it did in the painting -- quietly winding around a copse of cottonwoods and alders. Of course being winter, the water was lower than normal, but the river was pretty much content with its bends and twists. And then came this year, and our floods that seem to happen every 5 or 6 years, which totally transformed the spot: all the trees, and then some, are gone and swept down the river. I can see neighbors that I could only hear before. Of course it's not a surprise: when you live close to a river you get used to its whims -- the changes, some of them violent, when winter run-off joins with spring rain and the water has to go somewhere, so it reshapes the river. I don't keep a written record of it, but through paintings, I most definitely have a visual one. I call this painting, The Warming.
