Democratic officials copied names and signatures from old petitions and wrote them onto the presidential ones for Obama in 2008. Former Indiana Gov. Joe Kernan’s name appeared on an Obama petition; Kernan confirmed he never signed it. Pages showed the same handwriting repeating across multiple names. The petitions passed the local voter registration board because some of the people verifying them were involved in the forgeries. The scheme was directed by Owen “Butch” Morgan, then chairman of the St. Joseph County Democratic Party. He worked with three others tied to the county Board of Voter Registration: Dustin Blythe, Pam Brunette, and Beverly Shelton. The wasn't discovered until years later - after it was too late. -through local investigations. A Yale student and former Obama White House intern, Ryan Nees, looked at the documents and found that “page after page of signatures are all in the same handwriting.” Charges were filed in April 2012 against Morgan, Blythe, Brunette, and Shelton. Lucas Burkett, another voter registration worker, told investigators he had been ordered to forge Obama petitions and that the plan was discussed at Democratic headquarters. In 2013 a jury convicted Morgan of conspiracy to commit petition fraud and felony forgery - he was sentenced to 1-year but got out after 6 months. Blythe was also convicted on forgery-related counts - he received community corrections and probation. Brunette and Shelton pleaded guilty. Each received two years of probation.
