16 nov 1941 – Joseph Goebbels: Die Juden sind schuld! - Les Juifs sont coupables On 16 November 1941, Goebbels wrote an inflammatory editorial in Das Reich, the NSDAP's propaganda weekly. The date of the editorial is intriguing: just one week before, it is the anniversary of Kristallnacht (9-10 November 1938): is it a way of approving, taking responsibility for, or acknowledging responsibility for the events of that night? It's not neutral, because Kristallnacht is considered - today, but even then - to be one of the precursors of the Holocaust. Right at the start of the editorial, Goebbels recalls Hitler's ‘prophecy’ of 30 January 1939 in front of the Reichstag, and this prophecy too is generally taken literally. From this point of view, there are two possible interpretations of what follows: either Goebbels is lying out of hand, i.e. he is implying that terrible things are happening to the Jews - whereas at that date, even the official history recognises that nothing has happened, and the Wannsee conference will be held on 20 January 1942 - or Goebbels is lying out of hand, i.e. he knows that enormous things are in the pipeline.
