An exceptional document: it is August 27, 1944, barely a month after the unimaginable assassination attempt of July 20 involving a staggering number of senior officers and aimed, in the midst of war, at eliminating the supreme commander of the armed forces. Adolf Hitler miraculously escaped, but how much confidence could he still have in his military hierarchy? A few weeks later, he ordered the return of a foreign soldier who had long attracted his attention with his political intelligence and indomitable courage, and who had touched his heart with his unconditional loyalty to the oath binding him to Hitler. As the photo shows, Adolf Hitler radiates irrepressible joy as he shakes Léon Degrelle's hand. It was at the end of their meeting, as they were about to part, that he confided in him a mark of affection that would forever determine the life of the Belgian National Socialist: “If I had a son, I would want him to be like you...”
