Volta, which was founded in January, also said it had received backing from a string of US tech investors including Nvidia. The company, valued at $2.4bn, is the latest to attract substantial amounts of capital as AI companies rush to secure access to high-powered chips in data centres. Volta was founded by a group of UK-based former executives at the investment giant Brookfield and is run by Ricard Boada, a 33-year-old who led digital investments at Brookfield in Europe. The company says it has around 100 staff in London, New York and Silicon Valley. Volta said it had agreed a $10bn “strategic partnership” with an unnamed lab reported to be Anthropic, which makes the Claude chatbot. Anthropic did not respond to a request for comment. It said the deal would allow it to develop an AI data centre in Norway with Bitdeer, a cryptocurrency company that has since moved into data centres. It will be powered by Nvidia chips. Volta has raised around $300m in investment from Nvidia, Michael Dell, the tech billionaire, and venture capitalists Andreessen Horowitz and Altimeter Capital. It also said it had received $5bn of financing from the Spanish infrastructure company Azora. The company has been operating in “stealth” for the last few months, meaning it has sought to keep a low profile. The start-up said much of its work would be in raising funds for data centre projects, saying it was set up to “address one of AI infrastructure’s biggest bottlenecks: access to affordable capital”'.
