Thom Tillis is blocking the SAVE America Act from being included in the reconciliation package because he says the SAVE Act is a “waste of time and exercise in futility” #DC Critics say that Tillis is butt hurt because he was faced with the threat of being primaried - after repeatedly voting against Trump backed legislation - so he resigned instead of waiting to be booted out. #elections Tillis has also repeatedly voted against attempts to add the SAVE Act to reconciliation or funding bills. In a June vote-a-rama on a $70 billion immigration enforcement package, Tillis teamed with: 🔺️Sens. Susan Collins of Maine, 🔺️Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, and 🔺️Mitch McConnell of Kentucky to help defeat an amendment from Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina. The amendment fell short, with the vote going against it around 48-50, needing 60 votes to advance - but proving the GOP has the votes to pass with a simple majority. Tillis claims the SAVE Act lacks the votes and cannot be implemented in time for the November midterms. He has highlighted his experience passing voter ID in North Carolina as House Speaker, claiming it took a full year to roll out even that simpler measure - disregarding that more than 85% of Americans, including 76% of Democrats support voter ID in elections. #NorthCarolina Tillis co-sponsored an earlier version of the SAVE Act but has opposed versions that limit mail-in voting. He has said states like Utah, Florida, Alaska, and Montana rely heavily on mail ballots, and that a one-size-fits-all federal overhaul is not the right approach. In internal GOP messages, he criticized repeated votes on the issue during the vote-a-rama, saying they hurt vulnerable Republicans up for election and sparked unnecessary infighting. Republicans slammed Tillis and his trio of holdouts, calling them Rinos and saying they are full of excuses. Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri ripped the group, saying he could not understand why any Republican would oppose voter ID when it works. #Missouri Sen. Tommy Tuberville of Alabama accuses the anti-SAVE Act group of betraying constituents and acting as “accomplices” in a Democrat “Illegals First” agenda.
