July 18, 1861: Confederate Gen. Joseph E. Johnston received a telegram directing him to move his Army of the Shenandoah from Winchester to Manassas, #Virginia. The troop movements began with soldiers under Gen. Thomas Jackson marching out of Winchester at noon that same day. Confederate Cavalry under Col. J.E.B. Stuart masked the Confederates departure with feints, demonstrations and unpredictable maneuvers. Union Gen.
