In 1943, German forces discovered the mass graves of thousands of Polish officers and intellectuals in the Katyn Forest—victims of the 1940 NKVD massacre ordered by Stalin. Joseph Goebbels’ propaganda film Im Wald von Katyn documented the site. The Nazis immediately invited the International Red Cross and foreign press to examine the evidence. The Soviets (and much of the wartime West) blamed the Germans. The truth only came out decades later: it was Stalin’s NKVD.
