Before SVB's failure, it had over 30 supervisory warnings, including critical matters that needed immediate attention. As of June 2023, 18 large banks had 221 unresolved supervisory findings, with half failing satisfactory ratings due to risk management issues. Yet, regulators keep these findings confidential, only giving vague overviews in semi-annual reports. π Why It Matters: This lack of transparency reduces the pressure on bank managers to resolve issues promptly. Even in severe cases where a bankβs operations are critically deficient, regulators maintain confidentiality, leading to unexplained mergers being called off. π‘οΈ What Needs to Change: Enhanced disclosure, including significant warnings and restrictive agreements, would compel bank managers to act swiftly. A short delay in disclosure could balance transparency with the risk of provoking adverse reactions.
