McConnell, 84, has been absent from Capitol Hill since June 14, when his office said he was hospitalized after suffering a fall. He was later moved to a rehabilitation facility, and in an early August statement his office announced he had been discharged to continue his recovery at home, though no date has been given for his return to the Senate floor. In a statement released from the facility, McConnell said he was still working to get back to his full schedule, adding that he was keeping up with intense physical therapy per his doctors’ orders. His absence has drawn renewed scrutiny of his voting record on sick leave. In 1993, McConnell was one of only 27 senators who voted against the Family and Medical Leave Act, which guaranteed workers up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave to recover from illness or care for a family member. In 2015, he voted against a paid sick leave amendment attached to a budget resolution. In March 2020, during the early weeks of the COVID-19 pandemic, he voted against a Democratic amendment that would have strengthened and extended emergency paid sick leave benefits through the end of 2021, and later that year, as Senate majority leader, he blocked an effort to extend the paid leave mandate past December 31, 2020.
