@Heartiste More than that social security also provided the perverse incentives that allowed for the launch of feminism, and the whole of identity politics to follow it. It made family bonds that would otherwise be indispensable into one more disposable commodity. It broke down the role of bread winner for the husband and so had ill effects downstream on marriage. It begat massive budgetary irresponsibility. It warped people's sense of what government was for and what it should do. The nature of the relationship between government and citizen has never recovered. And of course it was the first and most predictable effect of having given women the right to vote. That in my book makes it the second biggest mistake in american history. So much trouble from one little act.
