Virtuous Victim Syndrome. It's the same reason liberal Whites, who as a class currently co-own the cultural, political, and academic spheres (along with yids), cast themselves as "the resistance". It's a lot easier to rationalize one's totalitarian persecution of political enemies when one frames it as the actions of the powerless against the powerful, rather than the powerful against the powerless.
